Would a floor length, printed dress be appropriate for a military ball?

I've been invited to the Corpsman ball (NAVY) in June. I'm a tall woman so I was thinking a floor-length gown would flatter the most. I want to wear a printed gown but don't want to overwhelm his dress whites. Answers??
