What do I have to major in to become a high school instructor?

I'd like to be a history instructor, US history if possible, and I plan to major in history. I'm seeing online quite a bit that in order to get a teaching certificate, you have to have an education degree, which I'm not really willing to pursue. Any teachers that were able to major in their subject and teach? All answers appreciated. Thanks!
