Were Corpsmen in the US Marines not allowed to be killed in the Pacific Theater?

As part of the Geneva convention, medics and corpsmen are not allowed to be knowingly killed. But they are also not allowed to carry weapons. But now since we aren't facing a conventional military medics can be shot. So they are training with weapons.
