As an FMF Corpsman are you always with Infantry units?

The reason I ask because my father was a Marine who was in Infantry and he worked many times with Recon guys and he said he knew quite a bit of FMF Corpsman who just stayed on a base out in the bush but never went with Infantry guys also speaking never went with him although they had Corpsman with them.
